Job Description Overview

Bishop Veterinary Hospital’s Veterinary Assistant Technicians play an essential role in the hospital’s daily operations. Veterinary Assistant Technicians 1 will provide excellent care to our appointments, outpatient, and hospitalized patients with a compassionate attitude. They will need to communicate well with the team and other hospital departments.

Veterinary Technicians will need to assist doctors and other hospital staff by providing complete care of patients and work area including assisting R.V.T. and Dr. in the care and patient treatments, helping to maintain a clean and upbeat environment, some medical equipment, maintaining appropriate working areas and kennels, along with proper records keeping. Be willing to complete on-the-job training with a willing, positive attitude. They are communicating with clients and the overall flow of treatment. Communication with the tech team, doctors, and front staff about the patient’s care throughout the day.

Physical requirements

  • Dependable attendance is required.
  • Punctuality – consistently on time for work.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds or more by yourself. Ask for help with lifting more.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
  • Willing to work long, irregular hours.
  • Willing to work weekends and call out when needed.

Duties –

  • Assist the Customer Service Specialist when necessary.
  • Support the goals of the hospital: help build the hospital and learn and implement new policies
  • Stay productive even on slow days.
  • Personable, greets other co-workers and clients with an upbeat, positive tone and a smile, maintains a positive, friendly attitude, and conveys warmth and care.
  • Use initiative in carrying out recurring assignments
  • Work independently without specific instruction, but refer deviation, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the Supervisor or Management for discussion and help
  • Communicate well with other staff members, and offer appropriate information and guidance, in a pleasant manner
  • Help others when needed without making judgments to negative comments
  • Be eager to learn new tasks and welcome challenges
  • Be willing to train new veterinary technicians/ veterinary assistants
  • Maintain composure and do not easily react negatively to situations
  • Be detail-oriented in all aspects of the job

  • Demonstrate initiative and teamwork in everyday duties
  • Help with keeping up hospital standards, provide a germ-free and infection-free hospital
  • Be willing to work with our high school students to help them develop good working skills positively and constructively.

Computer Knowledge

  • Willing to learn new computer programs

General Technician Skill and Knowledge

Housekeeping and Maintenance of Hospital:

  • Willing to learn and understand procedures used at Bishop Veterinary Hospital Keep an accurate count of medications kept in treatment and pharmacy.
  • Along with cleaning and general care of the patients, we provide fresh bedding, food, and water as needed.
  • Routinely clean hospital – including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, cleaning walls, counters, tables, etc. Along with refilling products.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of hospital equipment. Informing management or lead tech of malfunction of equipment.

Laboratory Duties

  • Working with lab technician

Nursing Care:

  • Perform Treatment daily including walking and medicating patients under the supervision of a Dr., RVT, or Assistant 2.
  • Follow Dr.’s direction for the patients
  • Treatment care of hospital and boarding
    • am/pm/noon – walk, water, and feed as instructed by Dr., RVT, or Assistant 2
  • Willing to learn about contagious, environmental, and zoonotic diseases and how to prevent and handle them

Surgeries:

  • Set up surgeries – working with the surgical technician about what will be coming into the surgery and what the patient needs will be

Diagnostics:

  • Assisting in performing diagnosis as needed for outpatients and hospitalized patients. Also followed but not limited to
    • Radiographs – small and large animal
    • Ultrasounds
    • Drawing blood
